In summer 2003 a bronze bracelet has been found by fortune not far from the place of the excavation in a Bronze Age cemetery. The place of discovery is on the southern edge of the Lake Bistreţ, village Plosca, Dolj County (Fig. 1). It is possible that the bracelet could be a piece from a bronze hoard lost today.

Broken from old time, the bracelet is decorated by incisions (Fig. 2). From the morphological point of view the most important element is the triangular section, so it could say that the piece belong to a large category defined on this element. Such bracelets are typical for the hoards belonging to the so called Cincu-Suseni type, from the beginning of the Early Iron Age (Hallstatt A) especially in Transylvania (Fig. 3).

In the area of the lake Bistreţ were searched some objects with flutted pottery belonging to the same period, to the so called Vârtop culture. It is very possible that the bracelet from Plosca belong to this culture reached the southern Oltenia as a result of the long distance exchange.

Articolul de faţă aduce în discuţie o figurină de teracotă cu reprezentarea unui încălţăminte descoperită în urma unei cercetări de suprafaţă pe malul sudic al lacului Bistreţ de la Plosca-Cabana de metal, jud. Dolj. Cu această ocazie dorim să clarificăm o confuzie regretabilă făcută între această piesă şi o altǎ piesă, descoperită în mormântul nr. 46, din necropola �uto Brdo-Gârla Mare de la Cârna-Ostrovogania. Articolul de faţă oferă un bun prilej de a rediscuta restul pieselor cu reprezentări miniaturale a unor încălţăminte sau a unor picioare umane cunoscute în arealul culturii Gârla Mare, majoritatea descoperite în sudul Olteniei. De asemenea trecem în revistă şi discuţiile mai vechi privind funcţionalitatea şi semnificaţia acestor figurine miniaturale, adesea confundate cu protome de păsări acvatice.

The article discusses a terracotta figurine representing a shoe, an object founded during a surface research on the southern beach of Lake Bistreţ at Plosca-Cabana de metal, Dolj County. On this occasion is rectified a regrettable confusion made between this piece and other one discovered at Cârna-Ostrovogania, in Grave no.46, in a Žuto Brdo-Gârla Mare cemetery. The article is a good opportunity to re-discuss the other pieces representing miniatures of shoes or of human feet known in the area of Gârla Mare culture, most of them founded in southern Oltenia. Equally, older debates concerning the functions and possible significances of these miniature figurines, sometimes confused with waterfowl protomae, are resumed.

We intend, in the first part of the study, to publish the helmet with figurative representations of Greek-Illyrian type, discovered at Găvojdia and, in the second part, to analyse the scenes represented on that helmet in the context of the Balkans art. The helmet made of a sheet of bronze with silver appliqués and found by accident in the Bega River is, by its figurative representations an exceptional piece; if the rider motive can be seen also on the helmets of Olympia and Trebenište, the scene of the wild boar being hunted by two pedestrians, situated over the visor, is not present on other helmets of this type found until now.  This piece can be placed in the IIIA1 type of the Greek-Illyrian helmets, dating from the end of the 6th – beginning of the 5th centuries BC. The rider and the wild boar hunt, as well as other ferocious beasts, such as the lion, the bear or the stag, are frequent scenes in the elite’s art of Greece, Thracia or Illyria, represented in precious metals, pottery vessels or frescoes in the graves and temples. The helmet of Găvojdia, together with other Greek-Illyrian ones without figurative representations found in the south-western part of Romania, prove that the north-Thracian aristocracy was connected to the mentalities and the tastes of the elites in the south-eastern Europe.

The ceramic human head discussed in this article was discovered in 1904 at Deta by B. Milleker, being now preserved in the Museum of Vršac. The main aim of this article is to identify the context of discovery, as well as the chronology and the type of this artefact. At the same time the analysis is taking into consideration the wider cultural significance of the vessels decorated with anthropomorphic elements within the Late Iron Age context in the Carpathian Basin, as well as in connection with the relationships between Celtic communities and the eastern Mediterranean area. The human head from Deta belonged to a vessel having anthropomorphic handles, a beaker or more probably a kantharos. The artefact must have come from a destroyed grave. According to its context of discovery and taking into consideration other analogies, the piece can be dated to the La Tène C1, more precisely to the second half of the 3rd century BC.

A Roman stone monument was recently discovered in the village Jebucu (Sălaj County). The piece is the fragmentary base of a statue of Jupiter, and should have been made by a provincial stonecutter, under the influence of the patterns from the town of Napoca. The inscription is partially preserved, and one could reconstruct it. It has to be dated in the last years of Septimius Severus’ reign. It attests a vicus Rucconium in the West of Dacia Porolissensis; only a fraction of its people was Roman citizens in that moment.

This study tries to prove the fact that the representation of a so-called Isis bronze statuette published by Al. Matei and found during the archaeological excavations in the Roman settlement of Porolissum is in fact a fragment of a statuary assembly representing a sexual act between an Egyptian Sem priest (this part is missing from the ancient times) and a woman (the artifact in discussion). This kind of depictions is very rare, including Egypt itself and unique in the Danube area of the Roman Empire.

The five archaeological levels identified in the Roman baths complex area at Stolniceni, dated in the period of the existence of Dacia Province, were chronologically dated as following: the 1st level: Trajan- the first part of Antoninus Pius’rule, the 2nd level: the last part of Antoninus Pius’rule up to Commodus’rule, the 3rd level: the Commodus – Caracalla period, the 4th level: the Caracalla – Philippus Arabs period and the 5th level: the Philippus Arabs-Aurelian period. The end of these five levels mentioned above was brought about by fire and destruction, the most powerful ones were characteristic to the 3rd and 4th levels. Even if the archaeological information is scarce, we believe that we can rely on the supposition that some phenomena that were identified in the thermae area might have had a great impact on the whole settlement. The difference between accidental destructions and intentional destructions can be established due to a vast array of information obtained not only form the site in question but also from a larger area. Thus, we consider that this approach should rely entirely on the historical information obtained as a result of a thorough analysis of the hoards horizon. Every hoards horizons represented in the region are associated with one destruction moment from the Roman baths, with one exception the horizon from the year 260. This situation determine us to reevaluate the chronological situation and to establish that is very possible to place the end of the Roman Buridava not in the time of Aurelian but at the beginning of Gallienus reign as sole emperor.

O treime a mormintelor sarmatice din Bazinul Carpatic (aprox. 23 %) contin indicii privind folosirea sicrielor, sub forma amprentelor de lemn sau prin prezenta scoabelor din fier în forma de „S” sau „C”. Pe teritoriul Banatului antic, sicrie sau alte tipuri de structuri funerare, au fost semnalate în cinci necropole plane (Szeged – Szareg, homokbánya, Kiszombor B, Vojlovica – Pancevo, Foeni, Giarmata) si doua necropole tumulare (Vizejdia/ Vizesd – Puszta, posibil si Dudestii Vechi/ ÓbesenyÅ‘). Numarul sicrielor era, cu siguranta, mai mare, însa din cauza conditiilor de mediu, a jafurilor si a documentarii arheologice incomplete (mai ales în ceea ce priveste mormintele tumulare), informatiile, cu privire la mobilierul funerar de lemn, sunt putine.

Cu toate aceste carenÅ£e, în doar câteva situri de pe teritoriul Banatului istoric, au fost documentate arheologic, amenajari funerare din lemn, extrem de variate: sicrie (posibil chiar si camere funerare), sicrie confectionate din trunchiuri de copaci (închise cu scoabe în forma de „S” sau „C”) ÅŸi targi funerare, pe care defunctul a fost depus, pentru transport, iar ulterior, înhumat.

Amenajarile funerare din lemn, mai sus amintite, reflecta reminiscente din traditiile sarmatice estice, influente romane, dar si particularitati locale, autohtone (de exemplu, utilizarea scoabelor din fier). Acestea atesta complexitatea ritualurilor funerare, dar mai ales diferentele existente în cadrul comunitatilor, a triburilor sarmatice venite în zona Câmpiei Panonice – Banat.

Coffins are found in one third of Sarmatians graves in the Carpathian Basin (about 23 %), noticed by the remnants of wood or the presence of “S” or C” shaped iron clamps. On the territory of ancient Banat coffins or other types of wooden funerary structures, are present in five unmarked necropolises (Szeged – Szőreg, homokbánya, Kiszombor B, Vojlovica – Pančevo, Foeni, Giarmata) and two barrow necropolises (Vizejdia/ Vizesd – Puszta and maybe Dudeştii Vechi/ Óbesenyő). Probably the number of coffins was higher, but due to environmental condition, robberies and incomplete documentation especially on barrow graves, the information concerning the funerary wooden structure are seriously lacking in details. 

Despite all of this, on the territory of ancient Banat, extremely varied wooden structures have been documented: box shaped coffins, possibly even burial chambers (at Vizejdia), coffins made out of three trunks (closed with “S” and “C” shaped iron clamps) and funerary stretchers, on which the deceased was placed for transportation and, ultimately, buried with it. All this different wooden arrangements reflect various influences: eastern remnants, roman funerary rites, but also local traditions, all of which give us clues towards the complexity of funerary rites and the differences within the Sarmatians tribes settled in Banat.

The archaeological evidence certifies that the clay vessel were one of the artefacts used in funerary practices by those communities who lived in Transylvania during the 7 th-10th centuries. The custom to place clay objects in graves varies from one community to other, from the frequency way of speaking, regarding the funerary rituals (cremation or inhumation) at both individual level and each of the necropolises, as well, for different chronological segments of the last centuries of the 1st millennium AD. The fact that only some of inhumation and cremation graves from the 7th-10th centuries Transylvanian necropolises had also clay vessels could have a double meaning. On one hand, the presence of pottery - entirely or broken preserved – in some of the graves has religious connections. On the other hand, but of same importance, the presence of pottery in grave is a mirror of social realities within those communities. The clay vessels placed near some of the funerary urns, or directly on the ground near the piles of cremated human bones can be framed as funerary offerings. The family has placed these vessels inside graves well-aware of the magic-religious meaning of these recipients needed to the dead on his way to the ‘everlasting life’. The quantity, variety of shapes, but especially the small sizes of this pottery (in most of the cases they are miniature vessels) found in the necropolises from west Romania and the Transylvanian Plateau dated in the 7 th-10th centuries may allow to forward the hypothesis on the presence of potters specialized also on funerary pottery.

The MureÅŸ Valley was alike a geographic and a cultural corridor lengthways of which people, ideas and goods have run since the prehistoric age till the dawn of the modern one. Obvious vestiges of ground and wall defensive structures that kept a check on that geographic corridor can be found throughout the river middle and lower stream. Bulci and CăpâlnaÅŸ are among them.

Literatura de specialitate nu a avansat o ipoteză concretă cu privire la apartenenţa administrativă a districtului din interiorul culoarului Timiş-Cerna. Această chestiune a fost lăsată la latitudinea izvoarelor documentare, care, din păcate, nu oferă o localizare exactă şi uniformă, în cazul districtului românesc. Astfel, cîteva documente de la începutul secolului al XV-lea poziţionează aşezări din districtele Mehadia şi Caransebeş, în comitatul Timiş. Evident aceste mărturii sunt suficiente pentru a susţine că întregul culoar se afla în interiorul comitatului, care, în astfel de condiţii şi-ar fi extins hotarele până la Dunăre. Totuşi, documentele ulterioare atestă că districtul se afla sub autoritatea banatului de Severin şi astfel, discuţiile cu privire la aşezarea sa administrativă pot fi reluate. În cele mai multe cazuri, poziţionarea Caransebeşului în comitatul Timiş, a fost întreprinsă, în momentul în care banatul de Severin era vacant. Nu contestăm această realitate, însă atragem atenţia că în aceste momente cetatea districtului revenea comitelui în calitate de honor, fapt ce nu implica neapărat ca districtul să fie integrat între hotarele comitatului. De altfel, acest lucru este dovedit de izvoarele care identifică, la scurtă vreme, acelaşi district sub Banatu Zewreniensis.

Ipoteza noastră, prin care susţinem că districtul Caransebeş constituia în sine o unitate administrativă este fundamentată pe celebrul privilegiu, din anul 1457 şi pe prezenţa instituţilor cneziale şi nobiliare. Începând cu acest momentm în cadrul districtului funcţiona, alături de binecunoscutele adunări ale nobilimii şi cnezimii romîneşti, un jude nobiliar. Aceste realităţi constituie mărturii indubitabile, pentru atestarea unor unităţi administrative. În fapt, districtul deţine instituţii care-i asigurau propria gestiune economică şi juridică. Mai mult, în interiorul districtului nu vom întălni prezenţa unor instituţii ale altor unităţi administrative.

Desigur, în cea ce priveşte autoritatea politică, această era asigurată cu intermitenţe de comitele de Timiş sau banul de Severin. cel din urmă împreună cu vicebanii săi au prezidat sau au fost prezenţi la mai mult de o treime din totalul adunărilor cneziale şi nobiliare ale districtului Caransebeş.

The literature did not propose yet a certain hypothesis about the administrative incorporation of this district from the Timis Cerna Pass. The documentary sources were in commended with this problem, but, unfortunately, were no able to offer an exact and uniform localization, in the case of the Walachian district. Thereby, some documents from de beginning of the XV century place de districts of Mehadia and Caransebes, within the Timis County. Obviously those proofs would make possible to sustain that the Pass, in the totality would be included into de Timis County, who should cover the region until the Danube. However, the posterior sources certificate that the district was placed under the authority of the Ban of Severin and, then the controversy about its administrative situation might restart. Generally, the District of Caransebes was included into the Timis County in vacancies of the head the Banat of Severin. We don’t question those facts, but we stress that in such a moment the fortress of the district belong to the count like honorary fee, and that doesn’t suppose the inclusion of the district in the county’s borders. The documentary sources, identifies, briefly, that the same district belongs to the sub Banatu Zewreniensis.

Our hypotesis, whereby we argue that the district of Caransebes constitues an administrative entity sui generis, is based on the famous privilege from 1457 and on the activity of the cnezial and nobiliar institutions. From that moment in the district, functioned beside the nobiliar and cnezial assamblies, one judex nobiles. Those realities constitute the essential profs in the confirmation of the existence for all the administrative entities. In fact, the district has institutions that assure its own economic and judicial administration. And also, in the interior of certain district it’s impossible to found institution belonging to anther administrative entity.

Obviously, regarding the political authority, this was assured, either by the Timis count, or by the Ban of Severin. The last one, whit the vicebans presided or assisted more than a third of the total of the cnezial or nobiliar assemblies in the district of Caransebes.

Epoca lui Sigismund de Luxemburg a fost una dintre cele mai reprezentative din istoria Ungariei medievale, fapt resimţit şi la nivelul realităţilor ecleziastice. Dacă pentru istoria bisericii ortodoxe există doar surse disparate în cazul catolicismul acestea sunt suficient de multe pentru a permite o analiză de detaliu. O serie de informaţii documentare au permis sondarea realităţilor de la palierul cel mai de jos a structurilor bisericeşti, respectiv a situaţiei parohiilor catolice. Numai pentru perioada 1387-1437 sursele menţionează 62 de localităţi care au deţinut cel puţin o parohie catolică. În mediul urban, la Cenad sau Timişoara, aceleaşi surse indică prezenţa mai multor biserici parohiale. Foarte important a fost modul în care au funcţionat acele parohii şi cum au interacţionat cu membrii societăţii. Ca în foarte multe cazuri din Ungaria medievală şi în Banat predomină bisericile patronate de către elita nobiliară. Diverşi membri ai elitei construiesc sau favorizează construcţia bisericii pentru comunitate, se implică în întreţinerea ei şi datorită acestui drept de ius patronatus pot contribui la alegerea preotului dorit. Analiza de faţă a dezvăluit faptul că impactul catolicismului a fost unul major resimţit în diverse medii geografice şi etnice din provincia de la sud de Mureş. Studiul este urmat de patru anexe documentare, in bună parte inedite, care vin să întregească informaţiile deja cunoscute despre lumea catolică a Banatului.

The age of Sigismund of Luxembourg was one of the most representatives in the history of medieval Hungary, including in terms of ecclesiastical realities. If there is only little information for the Orthodox Church history, the Catholicism sources are enough to allow detailed analysis. A series of documentary information allowed survey the realities of the lowest tier of Catholic Church structures: parishes. Only for period 1387-1437 sources mentioned 62 localities that had at least one Catholic parish. In urban areas, Cenad or Timisoara, the same sources indicate the presence of several parish churches. Very important was how those parishes worked and how they interacted with society. As in many cases of medieval Hungary in Banat most of catholic churches are patronized by the elite nobility. Various members of the elite build or help to build the community church; they are involved in church maintenance and because of this right of patronage (ius patronatus) may lead the appointment of a priest whom they propose. This analysis revealed that Catholic priests were involved in various aspect of social life. Most of the documentary mentions present the priests in conflict situations with noblemen especially with Himfy family. The study is followed by four documentary appendices, largely unpublished, which complete the information already known about the Catholic world of Banat.

Identificarea în teren a localităţilor dispărute a costituit şi încă mai constituie o problemă a istoriografiei şi arheologiei medievale româneşti. Pentru soluţionarea acestei probleme foarte utile sunt hărţile habsburgice realizate în secolul al XVIII – lea, mai cu seamă Prima ridicare topografică iosefină realizată pentru Banat în intervalul anilor 1769-1772. Prin suprapunerea acestor hărţi peste cele contemporane putem să identificăm cu suficientă precizie vetre de sat sau chiar aşezări dispărute. La Coşteiu am avut un astfel de caz în care informaţiile documentare coroborate cu informaţiile cartografice au dus la identificarea în teren a vechilor aşezări Possa şi Kastill ale căror vetre de sat au fost confirmate şi de săpătura arheologică. A fost cercetată parţial aşezarea dispărută Possa, unde s-a găsit material arheologic corespunzător secolelor XV – XVIII şi aşezarea dispărută Kostill unde s-a găsit material arheologic corespunzător secolelor XVIII – XIX.

Ansamblul de clădiri şi spaţii libere pe care timişorenii îl cunosc sub numele de „Timişoara 700” a fost denumit în amintirea aniversării a 700 de ani de la prima atestare a oraşului (1266). Această zonă suprapune vechea suburbie din Evul Mediu târziu care se întindea la nord de oraş, dar şi zidurile cetăţii de tip Vauban a Timişoarei.

În anul 2009 a început construcţia unei parcări subterane cu suprafaţa de 6,725 mp, împărţită în două corpuri (Incinta A şi B). Din nefericire, cercetăîrile arheologice se salvare au fost demarate abia în vara anului 2011, reuşind să recuperăm doar o parte a datelor ştiinţifice din cadrul incintei B.

Perimetrul mare de cercetare a permis efectuarea unor observaţii extrem de importante nu numai pentru istoria evoluţiei urbane a oraşului Timişoara, dar şi asupra tehnicilor de construire a fortificaţiei

The ensemble of buildings and empty spaces that the inhabitants of Timisoara know under the name of Square „TimiÅŸoara 700” was named in memory of anniversary of 700 years since the first attestation of the town (1266). This square superposes the old suburb that existed out of the medieval town of Timisoara at the end of the Middle Ages and also the walls of the Vauban type fortification.

In 2009, it started the construction of an underground parking area with a surface of 6,725 m2, divided into two enclosures (A and B). Unfortunately, the rescue archaeological investigations had begun only in the summer of 2011, succeeding in retrieving just part of the existent scientifical information from enclosure B. 

The large perimeter of research allowed some observations extremely important not only for the history of the urban evolution of the town of Timisoara, but also concerning the techniques of construction of the fortification.

Către mijlocul secolului al XVII-lea două din cele mai reprezentative familii nobile române ale banatului de Caransebeş şi Lugoj (Măcicaş de Tincova şi Mâtnic de Ohaba-Mâtnic) ajung în ingrata situaţie de a-şi disputa în faţa scaunului de judecată princiar dreptul de stăpânire asupra unor importante părţi din patrimoniul familial, expuse retractului şi prescrierii lor pe seama fiscului, motivaţia fiind în ambele cazuri legată de un prezumtiv fenomen de defectum seminis, invocat de avocaţii pricinilor vistieriei. Cauzele, susţinute în procese care s-au extins pe parcursul câtorva ani, au implicat o întreagă paletă procedurală, desfăşurată în faţa scaunului de judecată princiar; din fericire pentru acurateţea demersului istoriografic s-a păstrat aproape întreaga documentaţie aferentă, inclusiv sentinţele finale care au dat câştig de cauză celor două familii nobile.

La 13 octombrie 1716, garnizoana otomană a Timişoarei s-a predat, după un asediu care durase- 43 de zile, feldmareşalului principe Eugeniu de Savoia, generalissimul armatei habsburgice. Potrivit cu prevederile capitulării, Mustafa paşa, ultimul beilerbei al Timişoarei, era obligat să predea toate tunurile, ghiulelele şi praful de puşcă aflat în cetate. Până la 26 octombrie, ofiţerii principelui Eugeniu au făcut un inventar complet al materialului artileristic otoman capturat (material păstrat în prezent la Kriegsarchiv din Viena şi publicat de către noi). Servindu-ne de acest inventar, suntem acum în măsură să reconstituim imaginea artileriei otomane din Timişoara în timpul asediului din septembrie-octombrie 1716, precum şi pierderile pe care le-a suferit în timpul celor 43 zile de luptă.

On October 13, 1716, the ottoman garrison of Timişoara (Temesvar) surrendered after a 43 days lasting siege to fieldmarshall prince Eugene of Savoy, commander in chief of the Habsburg army. According to the terms of capitulation, Mustafa pasha, the last governor (beylerbey) of Timişoara, was forced to hand over all the guns, shells and gunpowder located in the fortress. Until October 26, prince Eugene's officers have made a full inventory-list (kept today in Vienna, at the Kriegsarchiv, and published by us) of the captured Ottoman artillery material. On this basis, we are now in position to rebuild the image of the Ottoman artillery at Timişoara in the eve of the siege from September-October 1716, as well as the losses suffered during the 43 days of the battle.

În colecţia de arme a MBT există la ora actuală 30 de iatagane, inventariate în registrele Secţiei de Istorie. O particularitate deosebită a colecţiei muzeului timişorean, este cea legată de prezenţa în număr mare (17 piese din totalul de 30) a iataganelor crnosapci, având plăselele din corn şi lemn de culoare închisă. Marea majoritate a pieselor sunt din vechea colecţie a muzeului, mai cu seamă din perioada antebelică, fiind capturi de război în urma campaniei militare austro-ungare din vara lui 1878, întreprinsă în vederea pacificării Bosniei. Piesa de rezistenţă a colecţiei de iatagane a MBT este cu siguranţă arma care pentru o scurtă perioadă de timp s-a aflat în posesia liderului primei mişcări antiotomane sărbeşti, Đorđe Petrović Karađorđe.

The collection of weapons held by The Banat Museum owns 30 yataghans, recorded in the History Department’s files. An important particularity of the museum’s collection is given by the great number (17 of 30 weapons) of crnosapci yataghans, horn-hilted or dark bone-hilted weapons. The vast majority of weapons comes from the old collection of the museum, especially from the pre-war period, as spoil of war resulted from the Austro-Hungarian military campaign held during the summer of 1978 to pacify the Bosnian territory. The “piece de resistance” of The Banat Museum’s collection is certainly represented by the weapon that was held, for a short time, by the leader of the first Serbian anti-Ottoman movement Ä�orÄ‘e Petrović KaraÄ‘orÄ‘e.

Prezentul articol se refera la fenomenul de confirmare a calitatii de nobil, solicitate de membrii ai familiilor care si-au dobândit nobletea pe parcursul secolelor XVI - XVIII în schimbul serviciilor militare sau a celor administrative.

Originea româna a protagonstilor documentelor de secol XIX pastrate în arhivele administratiei locale nu este precizata în mod explicit ea deducându-se într-o mai mica sau mai mare masurata dupa numele lor de botez si uneori dupa religia acestora.

Începând cu a doua jumatate a secolului al XVI-lea se înregistreaza o schimbare definitorie în modul de acordare a diplomelor de înnobilare, asistându-se la aparitia si proliferarea nobilimii armaliste în Transilvania, Banat si Partium. Scutirea de obligatii, în general fiscale, precum si acordarea unor privilegii persoanei înnobilate care se extindeau uneori si asupra urmasilor acesteia, însotita de blazon, a reprezentat o caracteristica a fenomenului înnobilarii.

Informatiile pastrate despre anumite familii de origine româna, a caror descendenti au solicitat confirmarea nobletei pe baza diplomelor de înnobilare primite de stramosii lor de la regii ungari, principii Transilvaniei si mai târziu de la împaratii habsburgi, vin în sprijinul formarii, de catre cercetatorii în domeniul istoriei, a unei imagini complete a fenomenului înnobilarii de-a lungul secolelor.

The present article reffers to the phenomenon of 19th century nobility confirmations asked by members of the noble families that gained their nobility during the 16th – 18th centuries for devoted military or executory services.

The Romanian origin of the protagonists of the 19th century documents kept in the local administration archives is not explicitly revealed but more or less presumed based on their christian names and sometimes on their religion.

Starting with the second half of the 16th century there can be detected a radical change in the way the nobility parchments were conferred being of common knowledge the proliferation of the armorial nobility in Transylvania, Banat and Partium. The exempt from obligations, usually of fiscal origin and the conferring of certain privileges to the ennobled person, which sometimes extended also upon his descendants, accompanied by a coat of arms, represented a characteristic of the phenomenon of ennoblement.

The information kept about certain families of Romanian origin who’s descendents asked the confirmation of their nobility based on nobility parchments received by their forefathers from the Hungarian kings, rulers of Transylvanian Principality and later on by the Habsburg emperors, help the historians to complete a global image of the phenomenon of ennoblement during the centuries.

La scurt timp după cucerirea Banatului de către armata aflată sub conducerea lui Eugeniu de Savoia sunt înfiinţate primele şcoli din Banat. În 1730 numărul acestora era în jur de 30. Învăţătorul era ales în fiecare an de către comunitate, el avea şi atribuţii de organist, fiind în acelaşi timp şi notar al comunei. Împreună cu preotul şi primarul, aceştia constituiau elita satului. Primul gimnaziu cu predare în limba latină a fost înfiinţat de către ordinul iezuit în 6 noiembrie 1725. Menirea principală a acestor şcoli era educaţia în spirit religios, fiind predate îndeosebi cititul, scrisul şi muzica bisericească.

The first schools in German language were founded in Banat shortly after the conquest of the region by the Habsburg Empire. In 1730 there were already about 30 schools in Banat. In the elementary schools, the teacher was elected by the local community and in the early period he had also the responsibilities of an organist and notary of the commune. Together with the priest and the mayor, they formed the elite of the village. The first secondary school, a secondary school with teaching in Latin, was founded by the Jesuit Order on November 6th, 1725. The main purpose of the German Catholic elementary schools was education in the spirit of religion by teaching reading, writing and church music.

În ultimul sfert al secolului  XIX, în comitatul Timiş, două asociaţii agrare au „concurat” pentru reprezentarea intereselor proprietarilor funciari: Societatea Agrară din Comitatul Timiş (SAT) şi Asociaţia Agricultorilor din Regiunea de Sud (AARS). Prima a functionat ca sucursală qvasi independentă a Societăţii Agrare Naţionale Maghiare (SANM), întruchipând puterea centrală, respectiv interesele proprietarilor de pământ mari şi mijlocii din comitatul Timiş. În contrast, Asociaţia Agricultorilor din Regiunea de Sud (AARS) a reprezentat -pe baze etnice- interesele micilor proprietari de pământ.

În cele ce urmează, dorim să analizăm activitatea Societăţii Agrare din Comitatul Timiş (SAT) şi a Asociaţiei Agricultorilor din Regiunea de Sud (AARS), doi protagonişti majori ai vieţii economice locale şi regionale din domeniul agrarian in perioada Dualismului Austro- Ungar. Cele două asociaţii sunt studiate conform metodei britanice de cercetare, accentuându-se rolul acestor asociaţii civile în formarea şi modelarea unui anumit tip de mentalitate competitiv, specific pentru a doua jumătate a secolului XIX.

Within the last quarter of the 19th century, in Timis County, two agricultural Associations were competing for representing the landowners' interests: The Agrarian Society of TimiÅŸ County (SAT) and the Association of Agricultors from the Southern Region (AARS). The former functioned as a quasi-independent subsidiary of the Hungarian National Agrarian Society (SANM), representing the central power and the interests of the large and medium landowners from the TimiÅŸ County. In contrast, AARS aimed to represent the small landowners, mainly those of German origin, although, over time, its membership also included wealthy landowners.

The article intends to perform a multidimensional monography, a comparative case study of the two agrarian associations, by using the interdisciplinary methods specific to social history, approaching the topic through the lens of social anthropology and combining the results with quantitative data analysis. The two associations are studied according to the British research method, stressing their role in the emergence and development of a certain competitive mentality, specific for the second half of the 19th century.

Vicentiu (Vincent) Grozescu (1838-1897) s-a născut şi şi-a trăit viaţa în Banat şi a ocupat funcţiile de preot greco-catolic şi protopop. El a prezentat un interes deosebit pentru istoria şi etnografia românilor bănăţeni în primul rând, a publicat studii referitoare la relaţia dintre românii bănăţeni cu ungurii şi autriecii. El a efectuat călătorii în România, stat independent din 1878. În 1885 el relatează impresiile despre Dobrogea, regiunea dintre Dunăre şi Marea Neagră ataşată României în 1878, până la data respectivă aflându-se sub ocupaţie otomană.

Vizitatorul a fost marcat de stilul de viaţă, de obiceiurile şi porturile populaţiilor de acolo, majoritatea turci şi tătari, descriindu-le pentr revista Familia de la Oradea cu care a colaborat şi în trecut.

Principalele caracteristici ale eseurilor sale sunt superioritatea occidentalului faţă de civilizaţia orientală pe care chiar o blamează şi dorinţa de impulsionare a (re)românizării provinciei prin colonizarea românilor din munţile Transilvaniei.

Vicentiu (Vincent) Grozescu (1838-1897) was born and lived all his life in Banat, the province of Hungary, and had the offices of Greek-catholic priest and archpriest. He was very interested in history and ethnography of the Romanians, those of Banat in the first place, but not exclusively, and published some studies concerning the relations of the Romanians of Banat with the Hungarians and Austrians. He also made trips in Romania, independent state from 1878. In 1885 he relates his impressions about Dobrudja, the region between the Danube and the Black Sea, which was attached to Romania in 1878, until then being under the Ottoman rule.

The visitor was astonished of the life style, the customs and the clothes of the inhabitants, most of them Turks and Tartars, which he describes for the review Familia (The Family) from Oradea, where he cooperated also before.

The two principle characteristics of his essay are the superior position of a western versus the oriental civilization which is even blamed, and the pleading for the (re) Romanization of the province by means of colonization of Romanians from the mountains of Transylvania.

Although Timişoara did not have a University to concentrate an academically elite, there has been an exceptionally intellectuality who was constantly preoccupied to form provincial individuality. One of the most remarkable representative personalities in the Banat was Cornel Grofşorean. The study deals in the first part about his personality with some biographical details. In the second part there is an analyses of a scientifically research manuscript. At the second part, the study deals about a scientific material made by Cornel Grofşorean called „The research of Banat village” for an exceptional occasion, which was the World Sociology Congress in Bucharest 1939. The participation of Social Institute of Banat-Crişana through Cornel Grofşorean at this event means an international recognition of importance and prestige. Unfortunately the study made for this, was never presents because the Second World War started.

Lucrarea de faţă are ca subiect negocierile dintre guvernul României şi diplomaţii români pe de o parte şi diplomaţii Antantei pe de altă parte din 1915, din perioada neutralităţii României în primul Război Mondial. În realitate încercăm să subliniem importanţa discuţiilor dintre guvernul românesc şi autorităţile franceze şi ruseşti privind drepturile României asupra teritoriilor aflate sub stăpânirea Imperiului Austro-Ungar. Ca rezultat al acestor negocieri Antanta a fost nevoită să recunoască drepturile României asupra Transilvaniei, Banatului, Bucovinei şi Maramureşului. Eforturile diplomatice a oamenilor de stat români s-au concentrat asupra obţinerii frontierelor considerate necesare pentru asigurarea protecţiei statului.

This study deals with the negotiations between Romanian governement and Romanian diplomats on one hand and the diplomacy of the Entente on the other hand in the year 1915, during Romanian neutrality in the First World Conflagration. In fact, we attempted to underscore the the discussions between Romanian government and the French and Russian authorities on the topic of the Romanian rights regarding Romanian territories under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. As a result of these negotiations the Entente had to acknowledge the Romanian rights on Transylvania, Banat, Bucovina and Maramureş. The hard diplomatic efforts of the Romanian men of state were designed to obtain the borders considered as essential in order to secure the protection of the country.

Studiul de faţă analizează activitatea Delegaţiei Permanente şi a Consiliului Comunal ale Primăriei municipiului Timişoara din anii 1926-1927. Concluzionând, în perioada analizată atât Delegaţia Permanentă cât şi Consiliul Comunal au fost preocupate de bunul mers al întreprinderilor comunale, fiind luate măsurile necesare pentru dezvoltarea economiei şi îmbunătăţirea sistemului de sănătate, social şi de educaţie. Sprijinirea vieţii culturale a reprezentat mereu o preocupare pentru Primăria Timişoarei.

The present study analyses the activity of the Permanent Delegation and of the Communal Council of Timişoara City Hall between 1926 – 1927. As a conclusion, during the analysed period both the Permanent Delegation and the Communal Council were solicitous about the proper functioning of the communal enterprises being taken the nesessary measures for improving economy, health and social service and educational system. Supporting cultural life was also an important aspect.

Vicemareşalul Forţelor Aeriene Donald F. Stevenson a fost comandantul Secţiei Britanice a Comisiei Aliate de Control pentru România, controlată de reprezentanţii sovietici, din toamna anului 1944 până în toamna anului 1947. În perioada activităţii sale în România Oficiul de Război şi Oficiul Străin îl numea şi „Comisar”; rangul său militar era echivalentul cu cel al unui General de două stele. Conform notei pregătite cu ocazia vizitei suveranului său, regele George VI, în data de 13 aprilie 1945, funcţia sa era de „reprezentant britanic al Comisiei de Control al Aliaţilor şi Comandantul Misiunii Militare Britanice în România”. Caracterul său denotă trăsăturile unui gentleman, lipsindu-i abilitatea de a încheia compromisuri politice. Stevenson era Air Aide-de-Camp al regelui George VI (1939-1940).

Studiul nostru are la bază microfişele Oficiului Străin din Arhivele Naţionale Române. Stevenson îşi preda rapoartele Oficiului de Răiboi, însă de regulă acesta trimitea copii Oficiului Străin. Reprezentantul Politic Britanic în România era un diplomat care raporta Oficiului Străin. În ceea ce priveşte numele „România”, britanicii scriau „Roumania”, iar americanii „Rumania”.

,,Cărăşana”, Casă de Economii Lugoj, constituită încă de la sfârşitul secolului al       XIX-lea, s-a adaptat continuu climatului economic din zonă, deţinând participaţii semnificative la mai multe întreprinderi din ţară. Deşi a trecut prin clipe grele în perioada 1939-1941, banca amintită a reuşit să contribuie, din plin, la dezvoltarea agriculturii, comerţului şi industriei locale.

Procesul de ,,românizare” al băncii lugojene a continuat şi în perioada 1944-1948, evreii nemaifăcând parte dintre acţionarii săi.

Sprijinul constant acordat de ,,Banca Timişoarei” S.A. Timişoara a permis îmbunătăţirea activităţii institutului de credit lugojean după al doilea război mondial.

Deşi societatea ,,Cărăşana” a devenit, în anul 1947, singura bancă din judeţul Severin care trebuia să finanţeze industria din regiune, datorită unor măsuri economice aberante şi a unui control sporit din partea statului în politica de creditare, situaţia financiară a băncii s-a înrăutăţit destul de mult, însă, la începutul anului 1948, încă dispunea de numerar suficient şi era capabilă să-şi desfăşoare activitatea în mod onorabil. Cu toate acestea, s-a dispus intrarea băncii amintite în stare de lichidare.

Cu probleme similare se confruntau şi alte instituţii bancare de pe raza judeţului Severin: ,,Banca Poporală”, Institut de Credit şi Economii Caransebeş; ,,Prima Cassă de Păstrare” S.p.A. Caransebeş; Banca Românească S.A. Bucureşti – sucursala Caransebeş; ,,Banca Graniţei” S.A. Caransebeş; ,,Banca Banatului”, Institut de Credit şi Comerţ S.A. Caransebeş.

“Cărăşana”, saving-bank Lugoj, founded in the end of XIX century, was futher adapting to the economical climate from the area, owning semnificants participants at many enterprises from the country. Also it has been through hard times in 1939-1941, the savingbank has managed to help the development of agriculture, trade and local industries. The process of  “romanization”of Lugoj's bank continued even in 1944-1948, jewis did

not took part of it's shareholder. The constantly support given by “The Bank Of Timişoara”A.S., Timişoara aloud the development of the activity of the institute of credits from Lugoj after the second world war. Even if the society of  “Cărăşana” became in the year of 1947, the only bank from Severin district that supposed to finance the industries from the county, all thanks to some aberrants measures and strong control from the state in crediting politics, the financial situation got worse in the beginig of 1948, still has got cash and was capable of unfolding it's activity in one onorable way. Even with all these, the case of abolition of the remembered bank was disposed. With similar problems others banks-institutions were dealing with in Severin district: ”Poporal Bank”, ”Institute of credits and savings, Caransebeş, ”First Saving House”, ”A.Sp. Caransebeş”, ”Romanian Bank”, ”A.S. Bucharest-branch of Caransebeş, Border Bank”, ”A.S. Caransebeş-The Banat bank”, ”The Credit and Trade Caransebeş”.

Situated in the category of “the traveler fellows” of the communists, the Patriots’ Union of Romania played an important role in the effort to conquer the power, along with other such structures as Plowmen Front, Hungarian People’s Union, Patriotic Defense, etc.

The Union of Patriots was founded by the communist circles in Romania as an illegal organization in the summer of 1942, in order to contribute to finalize a comprehensive internal opposition as against the war unleashed against the Soviet Union. After August 23rd 1944, its work was quickly redirected in order to un-fascism the country.y.

Partidul Naţional-Popular, intrat relativ târziu pe scena politică postbelică, a fost înfiinţat ca o anexă a Partidului Comunist. El trebuia să cuprindă, în cadrele sale, pături la care partidele zise muncitoreşti nu aveau acces, datorită neîncrederii pe care acestea le aveau faţă de comunişti. Conştientizând faptul că o mare parte a populaţiei României nu era înregimentată politic sau nu avea simpatii politice, comuniştii au hotărât transformarea unei organizaţii aşa-numită de masă, aflată sub egida lor, numită Uniunea Patrioţilor, într-un partid politic.

Popular-National Party entered relatively late on the political stage, made as a part of communist party. It supposed to include sections of population hereupon the parties of workes did not have any acces, because they could not troust the communists. Beeing aware of the fact that half of Romania's population was not fully political woven or did not have any political condolence, communist have decided the transformtion of one organization, under theier command, named as Patriots -Union, in a Political-Party.

În articolul de faţă ne-am propus să prezentăm – pe baza cercetărilor de arhivă – un fenomen nou apărut în societatea românească postbelică, fenomen ce pare să se manifeste mai degrabă pe timp de război şi ocupaţie. Este vorba despre însuşirea forţată a produselor (cotele obligatorii) prin care statul a confiscat o parte importantă a recoltei ţăranilor şi reacţia tărănimii din judeţele Timiş şi Torontal. Metoda era de inspiraţie sovietică, aplicată încă din timpul războiului civil din Rusia de la sfârşitul Primului Război Mondial. Ele au fost aplicate pentru prima dată în România  în 1945, afectând ţărănimea sărăcită de anii de război, de rechiziţiile efectuate de trupele de ocupaţie sovietice, de seceta şi foametea care s-a abătut asupra unei bune părţi a ţării în anii 1946-1947.

The present article aims to present - using archival information – a phenomenon newly appeared in the Romanian post-war society, phenomenon that seems to be typical rather for the times of war and occupation: the forced taking over of products (compulsory quotas) through which the State simply confiscated an important part from the harvest of the farmers and the reaction of the peasantry from Timis-Torontal county at the collecting. The method was of Soviet inspiration, experienced since the civil war that troubled Russia at the end of the First World War. They were for the first time applied in Romania in the year 1945 to a peasantry impoverished by the years of war, by the requisitions performed by the Soviet troops of occupation, by the drought and hunger which haunted a great part of the country during 1946 – 1947.

The gender emancipation process that covers the early years of the communist regime in Romania was seen by the Party as crossing a road from darkness and enslavement to light and freedom. Can the right way to women's emancipation be generally called the Woman’s Road? The Party proves that it can.

Evenimentele din decembrie 1989 au marcat decisiv istoria României, deschizând şi istoriografiei noi posibilităţi de exprimare, în deplină libertate. O consecinţă pozitivă a noii realităţi a fost intensificarea cercetării referitoare la acţiunile de salvare a evreilor din Ungaria şi Transilvania de Nord, prin trecerea lor clandestină, peste graniţă, din Ungaria în România. În lucrarea de faţă autorul s-a bazat pe mărturii publicate între 1990-1994 (de exemplu cele semnate de avocatul Aurel Socol), venind în completarea interviurilor publicate de Mânase Radnev şi a altor cărţi şi articole despre „Martirii evrei” (dintre care se distinge articolul istoricului Pompiliu Teodeor).

After the events of December 1989 all impediments with regard to restoring some aspects of the past, from the perspective of truth were vanished. A positive consequence of this new reality was to enhance research on actions to save Jews (in the spring and summer of 1944) from a certain death, by passing accross the border through the medium of experienced guides, from Hungary and Northern Transylvania in Romania. In this paper, the author uses the testimonies which have been published during 1990-1994 (as, for example those signed by the lawyer Aurel Socol), in addition to the interviews  published by Mânase Radnev and to other books and articles about the "Jewish martyrs" (among these the article of historian Pompiliu Teodor  is distinguished).
